Mason Fitch Cogswell was born in Canterbury, Connecticut, on September 28, 1761. Following the death of his mother, he was adopted by Samuel Huntington, who served as president of the Continental Congress between 1779 and 1781. Cogswell attended Yale College and was valedictorian of the class of 1780. Reverand Abel Flint was the secratary of the Connecticut Missionary Society in Hartford. Reverand Timothy Flint was a missionary for the society in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and Missouri and wrote several books one of which was on his experiences as a missionary. Reverand Salmon Giddings also served as a missionary for the society and set up the first Presbyterian church in St. Louis.
